Most visitors know Caen for its 1944 sacrifice, but within the martyred city lies a medieval epic etched in stone. At the center of this story stands a child who was never meant to survive.
At just nine years old, the boy who would become "The Conqueror" lost his father -- leaving him vulnerable in a world where noble children were routinely eliminated as rivals to power.
This tour follows the extraordinary trajectory of an orphan who survived multiple assassination attempts, secured his ducal authority, and went on to transform the political map of Europe. His bloodline continues within the British royal family to this day.
We will see why William chose Caen as his capital and how he used his charisma and and uncommon wisdom to legitimize and secure his rule.
We will also uncover the man behind the legend, as well as the love of his life - Matilda of Flanders, the Lady for whom William defied the Pope, and without whom there would not be a story to tell !
Starting at the ramparts of Caen Castle, where he held court, and ending at the Abbey of Saint Étienne, where he chose to be buried, this walk traces the life of a ruler who was as tempestuous as he was visionary.
The standard tour lasts about 4 hours and covers roughly 3 km ( 2 miles), Price: €300

Absolutely. Yes. The stories of castles and knights never seem to lose their fascination for children, and as a mom of three and a former teacher I’m very comfortable guiding families. I’m happy to adapt the route, stories and level of detail to the age, energy and interests of each guest.
My child uses a stroller, will that be an issue?
The city center has some cobble stone, but quite easy to cross with a stroller

By car: Paris to Caen via the A13 motorway is also about a 2‑hour drive in normal traffic.
From the train station to the historic center:
The train station is fairy close to the historic center . The walk is straightforward and takes about 10–15 minutes.
The historic center around the castle, abbeys and main shopping streets is compact and very walkable; most key sights are within a 10–20 minute walk of each other.
You can also take a quick ride on the bus or the tram.
Taxis are easy to find.
There is a luggage storage near the station from 4.5 euros a day, for example: here and here
Caen’s city center is mostly flat, though we do encounter some cobblestones and gentle slopes. I am happy to adapt the pace to your group.
Caen holds the “Tourisme & Handicap” label, which guarantees a high level of accessibility at its main tourist sites.
The "default" Meeting Point is at the entrance of the Caen Museum of Art. We can also meet at your hotel or at other place convenient to you.
Looking forward to seeing you!
